A griot is a well known historical title for a west african storyteller. It is often used to refer to male figures who travelled throughout the diaspora telling stories. Griots use several methods to convey a story including poetry, paintings, song, dance and storytelling.
As a woman with a strong matriarchal line of storytellers DYLEMA coins the term ‘Griota’ as a way of identifying the contemporary women griots who hold the space of storytelling in our modern world; The first of its inception on british soil, inspired by the Griots of the past is presented in this exhibition.
